Think back 70 or 75 years to a time when design began to break away from the traditional and elaborate rationalism that ensued for hundreds of years. As the styles of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Streamline and Zigzag Moderne emerged after the Industrial Revolution, designers as well as consumers fully embraced the Age of the Machine. Shiny chrome surfaces lay across curving forms or over expansive horizontal planes and glorified a dynamic new world on the move.

And suddenly, design was muted as World War II approached. Inspiration was buried away, along with some innovative and visually stunning design work. Skip ahead to 2005 when some curious members of BMW Classic opened a box and found the R7 bike 75 assembled - although not in shining condition. The engine was corroded, the metalwork was in dire shape, the battery was unusable, but the opportunity for restoration could not be ignored.

SW/Boostlogic/Performance Motorsports has raised the bar again, this time in the standing mile. Improving on their record last year of 229 mph, SW piloted his new car to 241 mph in the standing mile. To put this in perspective, the Bugatti Veyron tops out at 250 mph, but it takes several miles to get to that point. The Veyron barely hits 200 mph in the standing mile... This car is tremendously faster than the Bugatti. It also runs the 1/4 mile in 8.4 seconds. Amazing. Simply amazing.

Paul Newman died late last night at his farmhouse near Westport, Connecticut, after a long battle with cancer. He was 83. An artist, racecar diver and philanthropist, his company "Newman’s Own" donated over 175 million dollars to children’s charities since its inception in 1982. He is survived by his daughters Susan and Stephanie, and his wife Joann Woodward, whom he married in 1958.

Hirst' Sale of the "The Kingdom" (A Tiger Shark suspended in Formaldehyde) sold for £9.5m. Sotheby's had estimated the work at between £4-6m. The price tag certainly reflects The Kingdom's similarities with one of Hirst's most famous pieces - The Physical Impossibility Of Death In The Mind Of Someone Living.

I was being very optimistic below when I predicted the DOW falling into 10k territory, but to actually fall 500+ points. Wow. Today will be interesting as well because of AIG, Barclay's buying some Lehman assets, and the FED meeting to discuss rates (although, I doubt they will, and don't think they should change rates).
